Nigel Mills Receives CBE in New Year's Honours

Entrepreneurs’ Forum chairman Nigel Mills has been awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours for services to entrepreneurship and business in the North East and Cumbria.

As a founder member of the Forum, Nigel joined the board in 2009, stepping up to become chairman in 2012, a position he has held for the past six years.

Nigel’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1986 when he bought eight Tyneside-based shops, which he grew into a chain of 85 convenience stores and supermarkets across the UK. Known as Mills Group, Nigel built a multi-award-winning group that employed more than 2,000 people and turned over in excess of £100 million.

In addition to Nigel’s involvement in the Forum, he is also co-founder and chairman of The Lakes Distillery, a Cumbrian-based producer of whisky, gin and vodka and the largest distillery in England.

Nigel Mills said: “I am honoured, humbled and thrilled to have been awarded a CBE and that entrepreneurship in the North East and Cumbria has been recognised at such a high level. I want to thank everyone who has supported me, all the members of the Entrepreneurs’ Forum and, of course, my family who are equally as delighted. I hope it is something that can be used to further promote the aspiration, drive and talent of entrepreneurship in the future.”

Gillian Marshall, chief executive of Entrepreneur’s Forum, said: “We are delighted that Nigel has been awarded this well-deserved honour. He is a champion of entrepreneurship, both as chairman of the Forum, but also in his everyday business life where he has established and grown successful companies in the North East and Cumbria.”
