Brewin Dolphin’s John Newlands Listed in the Citywire Top 100

Citywire Wealth Manager has announced that for the 4th year in a row, Brewin Dolphin’s Newcastle-based investment analyst, John Newlands, has been named in their “Top 100”list of “selected individuals who are at the vanguard of the UK’s thriving private client investment management community”.

John is head of investment companies’ research at Brewin Dolphin, responsible for group-wide recommendations on the £4 billion of investment trust shares owned by the firm’s clients. John is the only wealth manager based in the North East to make the list, reinforcing Brewin Dolphin’s position as the leading wealth management and financial planning firm in the region.

On making the list again, John said, “I don't know whether being based in our Gallowgate offices, where I can see the St James’s Park stadium from my desk is an inspiration or not. But I think being one step removed from the daily turmoil of the City of London’s financial markets can sometimes help!.”

Those included on the list all hail from companies that allocate £1 billion-plus to collectives and their selection results from Citywire’s annual study that finds the individuals who surpass their core responsibilities to create and sustain the wealth of their clients. The seven-strong panel, who decided on the list, have experience in dealing with investment managers spans decades. They included a leading private client solicitor, an accountant, a wealth adviser and Asset Risk Consultants.

Brewin Dolphin Head of Newcastle Office, William Baker Baker said, “Being on the Citywire 100 list for a 4th straight year is quite an achievement and it’s great to have someone of John’s profile based here in the region. He has a meticulous approach to sifting through enormous amounts of research material and financial news every day that he somehow manages to make perfect sense of and pass the information to our client investment managers. An invaluable part of the team.”

John joined Brewin Dolphin as Head of Investment Companies Research, before which he ran his own managed funds consultancy, Newlands Fund Research. Prior to that he was Investment Companies Analyst at the London stockbroking firm of Williams de Broë Plc. He has also written a number of books and reports about the managed funds sector including ‘Put Not Your Trust in Money’, the official history of the UK investment trust industry, published in 1997.

The 100 on the 2016 list comprise a wide range of job functions and business models, with talent identified across private client investment managers, stockbrokers, discretionary asset managers, and those exercising authority over research functions within private client businesses.
