Amberley Primary School has been working in partnership with family-owned childcare chain Little Angels to open a 70 place nursery and out of school provision in Killingworth. 45 of these places will be for younger children under the age of three, as part of the government's school-based nursery programme.
The service operates 50 weeks of the year, from 7 am until 5.45 pm, and will reflect the shared core values of compassionate care, innovative education, inclusivity, transparency and integrity.
The first release of the new places launched in September 2025, from the school while extensive new buildings have been craned in over the summer and are due to open in early October.
Nursery owner Debbie Wylie said, ‘We have been working towards this project for families in Killingworth since before Covid so we’re delighted that plans are finally being realised over the summer weeks. Little Angels has provided outstanding care at the school since 2018 and we are well known across all our sites for exceptional child centred care and learning. We are excited that Emma and Karen and their team will be able to extend care and learning to children under three and will bring our innovative approach to them in Killingworth from the autumn.’
Headteacher Mr Tony Rigg said, ‘Everyone at Amberley is delighted to see our working relationship with ‘Little Angels’ develop further, providing a fantastic, enhanced childcare offer for our Amberley families and the Killingworth community as a whole. I can’t wait to see the completed project!”
Parents Catherine and Mike Smith are also waiting with anticipation for the new provision, “We are very excited for the new Little Angels nursery to open. Our son attends Little Angels after school club and is thriving. The new nursery means that our younger daughter can attend the same site and flourish with the Little Angels team.’
