Made Smarter reaches 350 firm milestone

A North East manufacturing support programme is marking a milestone after helping hundreds of businesses adopt digital technology.

Made Smarter has now supported more than 350 manufacturing businesses since launching in the North East in 2021, helping firms adopt digital technologies to improve efficiency and productivity.

Backed by Government funding, the programme provides training, expert advice and grants to small and medium-sized manufacturers, enabling investment in new software and equipment.

Recent projects highlight its impact across the region.

County Durham-based Dyer, a manufacturer of complex metal components, used funding to enhance its systems with real-time tracking and improved data collection, strengthening decision-making and operational insight.

Richard Bradley, executive chair of Dyer, said: “We already had the foundations in place, but they weren’t connected.

“Made Smarter allowed us to create a joined-up system that links production intent with real-time reality on the shop floor.

“It’s helped raise the digital maturity of the business, and that has had other benefits in terms of our staff knowing Dyer is a forward-thinking company.”

Meanwhile, Teesside-based Elemy Group introduced a new customer relationship management system, supporting a wider shift towards digital integration across its operations.

Richard Brine, managing director of Elemy Group, added: “Taking part in Made Smarter was about much more than just accessing grant funding.

“For me, the real benefit of the programme has been change management, and the way the company as a whole is now embracing digitalisation.”

Following additional funding in 2025, the programme has expanded further, continuing to support manufacturers as they modernise and scale through technology.

Julia Austin, programme manager for Made Smarter in the North East, added: “Technology is transforming the manufacturing sector, and businesses in our region have been leading this change by introducing new and innovative ways of working.

“Made Smarter is designed to help small and medium-sized manufacturers embrace new digital technology that can help their businesses grow.

“From Warehouse Management Systems and Near Field Communication technology to collaborative robots and advanced laser welders, Made Smarter is changing how we make things in the North East and ensuring businesses can compete on an international level.”
