Northern Forestry Conference Announced

The Northern Forestry Conference, an event exploring the future of forestry, land use, and the use of wood across the economy of northern England, is coming to Newcastle’s Discovery Museum on Thursday 15th May.

Set against the backdrop of northern England’s rich forestry landscape, the conference – organised by Forestry Commission-funded programme, Northwoods - will explore the direct contribution forests and timber make to the north, and the opportunities that growing all parts of the sector can bring for the economy and to meet our Net Zero targets.

The interactive event will engage the audience in discussion and debate, with input from a range of high-profile figures representing a host of industries and sectors impacted by forestry. Sessions will be opened and chaired by Dougal Driver, CEO of Grown in Britain, and Jo O’Hara, former Chief Executive of Scottish Forestry, who will be joined by a range of speakers throughout the day.

Those confirmed include: Professor Patricia Thornley (Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute), Paul Brannen (Confederation of Timber Industries), Ross Lowrie (North East Combined Authority), Andrew Weatherall (RSPB), Dr Jonathan Scurlock (National Farmers Union), Alex MacLennan (Forestry England), Stuart Dainton (National Forest Company), and journalist and author, Rebecca Smith.

The audience will also hear from international guest, Maura Adams, who will bring lessons from the Northern Forest Centre, a region in the eastern USA which has a forested area equivalent to 50% of the UK’s total land. Recognised globally as an exemplar of a regional economy grounded in sustainable forest management, it demonstrates how timber processing and manufacturing can be complemented by growing industries such as tourism and outdoor recreation.

Those encouraged to attend – in addition to foresters – include MPs, researchers, county and local councillors, economic development, sustainability, energy, and carbon professionals, alongside business owners, innovators, investors and students.

Neil Harrison, Director of Reheat, the company which hosts and manages Northwoods, said: “With huge investment in timber processing capacity, the rise of exciting and diverse new markets, and the success of local tree planting programmes, the conference arrives at a pivotal moment for the sector. Attendees can expect a packed programme of expert speakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities designed to inform, inspire, and spark collaboration across the industry.”

The Northern Forestry Conference will take place on Thursday 15th May, 09:00-17.00 at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle, there will also be an after-event dinner.  For more information and to book tickets please visit:
