Moody Logistics and Storage has expanded its cross-deck loading facility by 3,500 sq. ft following a three-fold increase in the volume of palletised freight it handles.

Located at the company’s headquarters at Bolam Business Park in Cramlington, the project increases the cross-deck area from 12,500 sq. ft to 16,000 sq. ft – enabling the family-run business to manage significantly higher freight volumes while maintaining safe and efficient operations.
Extra capacity was created by integrating a separate storage area into the cross-deck operation, removing internal walls, reconfiguring the layout and installing two additional warehouse doors. This improved layout allows pallets to be handled more efficiently, while ensuring the entire loading process remains under cover. It also provides room for further expansion in freight handling as the business continues to grow.
The original cross-deck facility – where goods are unloaded from incoming vehicles, sorted by destination and quickly reloaded onto delivery vehicles – opened in late 2017 and has become a key part of the company’s operation, reducing the need for long-term storage.
Growth in pallet volumes reflects Moody Logistics’ strengthening role within national pallet networks, as well as wider changes in the UK logistics sector. A founding member of the Pall-Ex network, it currently delivers to all NE postcodes and much of the DH area.
Demand for palletised freight services has also increased in recent years, due to the boom in e-commerce and need for cost-efficient logistics.
Managing Director Caroline Moody, said: “We’ve experienced a three-fold increase in palletised freight in recent years. When our cross-deck facility first opened, we were handling just over 100 pallets daily, a figure that has now risen to around 350 pallets.
“It was increasingly challenging to manage that volume within the existing space, so we increased capacity to ensure the environment remains safe for the team operating forklifts and loading vehicles.
“We’re extremely proud of our cross-deck facility because everything can be loaded under cover, an important factor in maintaining the integrity of our customers’ freight and ensuring goods move quickly, safely and securely through our network.”
