Dr Craig Rose — marine biologist, CEO and founder of Seaweed & Co. and the Doctor Seaweed brand.
After a PhD in marine science at Newcastle University, I went straight into business, establishing a niche consultancy, which was then sold to a larger consultancy company.
I was part of the team that then did a management buyout of this company. During my time there, I had a client looking at seaweed for biofuels. It was from there, and with my marine biology background and passion for the sea, that I saw the opportunity with seaweed for health and nutrition - a forgotten food that we needed to rediscover.
In 2015 I established Seaweed & Co., with supply and production based in the Scottish Outer Hebrides.
With a Virgin Startup Loan of £25,000, we got going and established an ingredients business under our PureSea brand, now with global distribution.
In 2018, we launched the Doctor Seaweed consumer brand, with the vision of everyone feeling wonderful with seaweed.
The brand, centred on nutritional supplements, is sold in Boots, Holland & Barrett, QVC, Amazon and online (www.doctorseaweed.com).
There is a way to go still, and seaweed offers immense and sustainable opportunities.
The offices are based on the Fish Quay, and we are passionate about growing a business in the North East.
