About NESF

The North East STEM Foundation (NESF) is dedicated to breaking down barriers and opening doors for young people to explore and succeed in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Its mission is simple but powerful: to ensure every child, regardless of background, can study STEM subjects in a modern, high-quality environment supported by employers. By doing so, NESF helps secure the future of both local industry and the regional economy with a pipeline of highly skilled, innovative workers.

NESF delivers on this mission in three key ways: by inspiring and attracting future generations through outreach programmes; by removing financial barriers that prevent access to opportunities; and by working with schools, colleges and employers to create modern STEM-focused environments at Key Stages 2, 3 & 4.

A cornerstone of this work is the charity’s Primary STEM events. These sessions spark curiosity from an early age, offering hands-on activities that promote teamwork, problem-solving and creativity. Importantly, children also meet real-world role models, seeing first-hand that STEM careers are exciting, attainable and diverse. To date, NESF has engaged over 5,500 children across 73 schools in the region (figures subject to update).

However, one of the greatest barriers for many schools is simply getting pupils to these events. Transport costs are often the deciding factor in whether a child can take part. That is why a vital portion of donations is directed towards covering buses and travel expenses. By removing this obstacle, NESF ensures no child is left behind because of financial constraints.

With the continued support of local employers and generous donors, NESF can keep delivering life-changing opportunities. Every contribution—particularly towards transport—directly opens the door for more young people to experience STEM, inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
