Born in County Durham, Helen first recognised her talent for business working in the family grocery store. Never one to sit still, it wasn’t long before her entrepreneurial spirit led her to venture out on her own and open the first Helen McArdle care home in 1989, after refurbishing an old vicarage in West Pelton.
Over 25 years later, Helen McArdle Care is still a family business with 17 care homes providing the highest quality of comfort and service. Employing over 1,150 staff across the North East, with a turnover of almost £32m, the company is now officially the top UK care provider in the country after receiving their 4th CQC “Outstanding” award.
Helen has experienced a great deal across her career, including the sale of the care home business, twice, building over 30 new care homes, providing support to over 4,500 residents and founding Kids 1st Day Nurseries.
Active in the region’s charitable sector, Helen has donated over £2m to local and international charities during the last seven years, including the Tyne & Wear Community Foundation, Percy Hedley Trust, Calvert Trust, Maggie’s, The Prince’s Trust and Build Africa. She was awarded an CBE in 2015 for her services to the care home industry and the local community.
