In 2016, husband and wife team David Knibbs and Lydia Smith decided to rip up the rulebook and stick their tongue out at the tofu establishment.
Recognising the potential of the meat-free market, David and Lydia ‘begged, borrowed and blagged’ enough cash to buy a small artisan business in Malton, known for creating the best organic tofu, with the mission of getting UK consumers to fall in love with the white organic soybean blocks.
After a year’s extensive research, brand building and schmoozing buyers, their first two flavours (Naked and Smoked Tofoo) hit the shelves as they secured their first major listings at Tesco and Ocado. Their product range – which now includes 10 varieties of tofu and three varieties of tempeh – can now be found at all major UK supermarkets.
Applying their combined knowledge of the food industry gained throughout their careers, David and Lydia have led The Tofoo Co to success; it’s now the UK’s number one tofu brand, known for its organic ingredients and quality production, and creating 100 tonnes of handmade tofu per week from their Malton-based factory.
