Accountancy staff tackle three peaks challenge to raise money for charity

Employees from Jesmond and Durham-based Robson Laidler Accountants are set to take part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise money for charities in the North East.

Starting at 4:30am on Saturday 2nd September 11 members of staff plus two of their clients will take on the gruelling challenge, which they hope to complete in 16 hours in aid of Robson Laidler’s Community Foundation Fund, which gives money to those most in need throughout the region.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is one of the most popular hiking challenges in the UK. The route takes in the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park – Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent. The three peaks form part of the Pennine range and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Director, Martin Wardle who is also taking part in the challenge said: “We wanted to do something fun but challenging as a way of raising money for our Fund and to generate some great team building and camaraderie amongst our staff.

“Giving back is an intrinsic part of everything we do here at Robson Laidler. We are proud to be an accredited B Corp, which means we aim to make our business a force for community good. The Robson Laidler Community Fund ensures we’re looking after those community commitments long-term.

“We decided on the Yorkshire Three Peaks as it’s something that those who aren’t at full fitness can train towards in groups and it’s on our doorstep! We've already set up training walks and are looking forward to the challenge.”

Gemma Graham, Robson Laidler Better Health at Work coordinator said “With the Yorkshire Three Peaks having a reputation for being both physically and mentally demanding, the team is preparing for anything that might be thrown their way, from bleak weather to sore feet! And the challenge therefore fits nicely with our health and wellbeing sessions at work too – from fitness to mental health resilience.”

The Robson Laidler Community Fund is managed by County Durham Community Foundation. It gives charities and social enterprisesopportunity to apply for funds; the majority of which comes from Robson Laidler’s year-end profits. In line with the firm’s company values, it aims to support causes that alleviate poverty, develop skills and tackle unemployment to raise aspirations in the North East.

In support of the Three Peaks challenge Country Durham Community Foundation has agreed to match every £1 raised with 50p to generate even more funds to support local community activity.

The hiking challenge is being led by Gateshead-based Alexander Adventures who also provide a full training schedule and practice walks before the big day as well as food and drink for participants during the challenge itself.
