A County Durham fish and chip shop has been recognised among the best in the country after scooping a major national award.

Grandpa’s Fish Bar, based in Lanchester, has been crowned best multi site operator at the prestigious English Fish and Chip Awards.
The award celebrates the business’ success across both its traditional shop and mobile van operation, with judges assessing the quality and consistency of both businesses as well as plans for future growth and development.
In a post shared on Facebook, owners Rich and Aidan Weatherburn said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have been crowned best multi site operator at the English Fish and Chip Awards.
"This award recognises both our shop and our van operation, with judging based on the quality and consistency of both businesses, as well as our plans for future growth and development.
"To be recognised on a national stage for what we’re building is something we’re incredibly proud of.”The team also had further reason to celebrate after a standout performance in one of the competition’s toughest categories.
Fish fryer Thomas 'Tommo' Moran, from Lanchester, took part in a live cook-off against 14 of the best fish fryers in the country, with his battered seafood judged by three industry figures.
He was named runner-up, a result the business described as a huge accomplishment.
“To us, he’s the winner every day of the week, but to achieve this on a national stage against such incredible competition is a huge accomplishment and one that is thoroughly deserved," the Weatherburn brothers said.
The win prompted an outpouring of well-wishes on Facebook from customers.
Angela Therese Walton said: "Fantastic achievement for everyone at Grandpa’s Fish Bar you should be extremely proud of yourselves."
Emily Morris said: "Amazing achievement! Well done to you all. So well deserved."
While, Diane Noble said: "Well done gentlemen, well deserved, you have worked hard."
Grandpa’s Fish Bar has built a strong local following for its traditional fish and chips, while its van operation has helped extend its reach across the area.
Thanking staff and customers, the business said: “A massive thank you to our amazing team, loyal customers, and everyone who continues to support us.
"These achievements wouldn’t be possible without you. Onwards and upwards!”
