Thousands of tonnes of earth have been made ready for a 1,500-space park and ride facility to serve rising numbers of workers at Teesworks.
Land preparation has now been completed on the 35-acre site near Steel House, Redcar, to secure a transport hub set to feature parking spaces, bicycle parking, electric vehicle chargers and shuttle bus services.
When complete, the park and ride will keep congestion to a minimum both on the Teesworks site and on the wider road network.
The car park will be used by workers on major projects including Net Zero Teesside Power, which will create up to 4,000 jobs during construction, as well as the SeAH Wind offshore wind monopile facility currently being built.
More than £7million of advanced earthworks has been completed following planning approval being granted for the park and ride last year.
A procurement process for construction contractors to create the facility is now under way.
Martin Corney, Teesworks CEO, said: “Progress on remediating land at the Park and Ride has been very pleasing – and shows how we’re getting on with the job to ensure major employers at the Redcar end of the Teesworks site can hit the ground running.
“We’ll have the facilities and infrastructure ready to serve our growing workforce when these huge green energy projects gather pace.
“Hundreds of well-paid jobs have already been created for the people of Teesside and this project will allow hundreds and thousands more people to be well served when they work here.”
The Park and Ride site itself is bound by the former Steel House offices car park and south of the Tees Valley Railway Line.
Access is being provided via a new junction off the A1085 – with a new slip road also in the offing.
