A Sunderland HR expert with more than 20 years’ experience helping businesses navigate changing workplaces is launching a new book exploring one of the biggest people challenges facing employers today.

Louise Kennedy, founder and director of North East-based HR consultancy Oculus HR, will publish Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work on 13th October 2026.
The book explores how different generations approach everything from communication and feedback to flexibility, technology, career progression and expectations of their managers, and how businesses can prevent those differences from becoming a source of friction.
Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work grew out of Louise’s podcast of the same name, which has seen her speak to guests from different generations about their experiences of work, the expectations they bring to the workplace, and the assumptions that are often made about them.
Those conversations, combined with more than two decades of Louise’s own experience in HR, highlighted just how often generational stereotypes can get in the way of understanding what people actually need from their workplace and their managers.
It comes at a time when workplaces are becoming increasingly multi-generational and employers are responding to changing expectations from younger employees, particularly Gen Z.
But while Gen Z is often characterised as lacking the work ethic of previous generations, the reality facing many young people entering work is increasingly competitive. More than 1.2 million applications were submitted for just under 17,000 graduate vacancies in the UK, according to the Institute of Student Employers’ Student Recruitment Survey 2024.
Louise believes figures like these highlight the need to look beyond the headlines and better understand the experiences shaping younger employees and their expectations of work.
Rather than adding to the stereotypes surrounding different generations at work, Louise wants the book to help managers better understand where those differences come from and give them practical ways to build stronger, more effective teams.
Louise said: “The podcast started so many interesting conversations. Speaking to people from different generations really highlighted how differently we can experience the same workplace, but also how much common ground there actually is.
“There is so much conversation about Gen Z in the workplace, and a lot of it starts from the assumption that they’re difficult to manage or that they simply don’t want to work in the same way as previous generations.
“But every generation has entered the workplace with different expectations. The challenge for managers isn’t to decide which generation has got it right. It’s to understand those differences and create a workplace where people can communicate, perform and work well together.
“The book felt like a natural next step. I wanted to take some of those conversations further, move beyond the stereotypes and give managers something practical they can actually use.”
Drawing on Louise’s experience working with businesses and their people for more than two decades, Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work looks at some of the areas where generational expectations can collide, from attitudes towards work-life balance and career progression to communication styles, technology and the relationship employees expect to have with their managers.
It also provides practical tools and strategies to help managers have better conversations, challenge assumptions and create workplaces in which employees of different ages can work effectively together.
Louise added: “This isn’t about treating people differently because of their age or putting everyone into generational boxes. Quite the opposite.
“It’s about recognising that people may come into the workplace with different experiences and expectations, asking better questions and giving managers the confidence to understand the people in front of them rather than making assumptions.”
Louise founded Oculus HR in 2013 and has since grown the Sunderland-based consultancy into an award-winning HR business supporting organisations across the North East and beyond.
Oculus HR works with businesses through practical HR support, people strategy, training and development, helping managers navigate everything from day-to-day people challenges to longer-term workplace change.
The publication of Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work forms part of a wider focus from Louise and Oculus HR on helping businesses prepare for the changing workplace.
To coincide with the book launch, Louise will host Mind the Generation Gap: Creating the Future-Ready Workplace on Thursday 15 October 2026 at The Fire Station in Sunderland, as part of Sunderland Business Week.
The event will bring together North East business owners, managers, and HR professionals to explore the realities of managing a multi-generational workforce, with practical discussion around changing workplace expectations, communication, engagement, and how businesses can create environments where different generations can work effectively together.
Louise will draw on themes from Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work as part of the event, taking the conversation beyond the pages of the book and giving employers practical ideas they can take back into their own workplaces.
Mind the Generation Gap: How Gen Z Is Changing the Future of Work by Louise Kennedy will be released in paperback and e-book format on 13 October 2026 and will be available through Amazon.
