Paid Placements To Drive Forward Careers For Young People

Young people across Tees Valley will be eligible for paid work placements under plans for a major new initiative unlock their potential and drive forward careers.

Tees Valley was selected last year as the location for one of eight Youth Guarantee Trailblazers under which it will receive up to £5million to support youth employment.

The one-year programme will see Tees Valley lead the way in providing innovative ways to support people aged 18–21 who are Not in Employment, Education, or Training (NEET).

A detailed proposal has now been developed by TVCA on how to deliver on the programme’s objectives. It will be subject to a decision by the authority's Cabinet at a meeting next week.

Under the proposals, £3million would be allocated to fund hundreds of high-quality paid work placements and non-paid work taster sessions for those aged 18-21 who are not in employment education or training.

The aim is to tackle a lack of work experience which can too often prove to be a major barrier to employment for young people.

A further £1.3million would be allocated to fund tracking to ensure 18 and 19-year-olds who are not in employment, education or training - or at risk of becoming so - are identified and secure support.

It will also support work with young people in Year 13 to understand their needs and support those without positive post-18 destinations.

The remaining funding will bring together key service providers and organisations to looking at developing new strategies to best to support young people.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We are bringing tens of thousands of new jobs to Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool but it’s essential our young people can take advantage of the opportunities available.

“This Trailblazer will provide targeted support - including paid work placements - to help our talented young people get on the job ladder, drive forward their career and truly unlock their potential.”

The proposals have been developed with support from key established groups such as Tees Valley Business Board and Tees Valley Education Employment and Skills Advisory Group.

Subject to approval, TVCA will be required to enter an agreement with the Department for Work and Pensions for the delivery of the Youth Trailblazer, with activity expected to start as soon as possible after 1 April 2025.

Tees Valley Combined Authority Cabinet will meet on March 28 to consider the proposals.
