Samantha Vassallo, Horizon Works

Samantha Vassallo is founder and Managing Director of Horizon Works, an international B2B marketing agency based in Northumberland. The company, which was launched in 2010, works with ambitious and fast growing innovation and technology led manufacturing and engineering businesses that are creating solutions of worldwide importance.

Samantha has taken Horizon Works from a start-up with a single employee, to a company with an extensive specialist marketing team that is empowering SMEs and multinationals to gain global recognition and adoption for their products and services.

She has also built up a strong national reputation in the engineering and manufacturing industry, though forging long-term partnerships with organisations including Make UK and Make UK Defence, Engineering and Manufacturing Network, the North East Automotive Alliance and NOF, and bringing marketing expertise to their members. 

Before founding Horizon Works, Samantha worked in senior sales and marketing roles across the life sciences, professional services and education sectors.

James Widmer, Advanced Electric Machines

James Widmer is CEO and Co-Founder of Advanced Electric Machines (AEM). AEM designs and manufactures a range of uniquely sustainable electric traction motors for customers around the world for commercial vehicle, passenger car and off-highway applications. AEM’s powertrain technologies do not rely on environmentally damaging rare earth magnetic materials, and yet offer class-leading performance, efficiency and recyclability. AEM has volume manufacturing facilities in the UK and is working to establish facilities around the globe.

James previously led the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK’s Electric Machines Spoke based at Newcastle University (UK), amongst other activities leading the development of the UK car industry’s electric motor technology roadmaps. James has also held senior positions in the aerospace industry, leading large transnational development programmes. James holds the part-time post of Professor of Advanced Propulsion at Coventry University (UK) and is the Advisory Board Chair of the Electric Revolution Skills Hub (UK).
