From humble beginnings to the halls of Buckingham Palace, Tania Cooper MBE’s journey is a masterclass in grit, graft and purpose-led leadership.

"I didn’t set out to be in engineering, but with a background in finance and business, I’ve found myself running engineering companies - and loving the challenge".  Tania’s route to the top didn’t follow a script – and that’s exactly why her story stands out. She's the Managing Director of Steel Benders (UK), a fast-growing Teesside firm, and a fierce advocate for equality, education, and enterprise. Along the way, she’s built businesses, mentored rising stars, fronted major STEM initiatives, and still found time to champion local charities.

It’s that blend of commercial grit and community spirit that earned Tania the 2024 Jane Turner Award for Outstanding Contribution at the Tees Businesswomen Awards and a nomination for the Caroline Theobald Award at this year’s Entrepreneurial Awards.

Her work speaks volumes. From safeguarding North East jobs during a transatlantic corporate buyout to challenging gender pay gaps head-on, Tania’s career is fuelled by courage, clarity and conviction. When faced with misogyny or outdated assumptions, she didn’t back down, she stepped up.

Education is where her passion meets purpose. As chair of the North East STEM Foundation, Tania is shaping the pipeline of future talent, leading efforts to create a new technical college on Teesside and breaking down barriers for young people, no matter their postcode or background.

Mentorship, too, is close to her heart. She’s a natural connector, sharing knowledge, lifting others up and building bridges between boardrooms, classrooms and communities. And she’s clear about the power of networks: “It took me a long time to realise the value of mentoring and peer support. Now I’d tell anyone—don’t wait.”

A true force in manufacturing and leadership, Tania’s journey with Steel Benders is a testament to determination, innovation, and bold decision-making. Join us for an exclusive evening as she reflects on the highs and lows of building a business in a traditionally male-dominated industry, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and her vision for the future of UK manufacturing. Expect honest insights, practical advice and inspiration served straight.
